ABOUT RIGALDON

Rigaldon is a contemporary version of Giraldon, a well-known French typeface from the early 20th century distributed by the famous Deberny & cie foundry. The typeface bears the name of its creator, who was responsible for the initial drawings, which were then transformed into punches and movable typefaces by the foundry. Adolphe Giraldon was a well-known French illustrator and decorator who was part of the Art Nouveau period at the turn of the century, and whose work mainly appeared on book covers or as illustrations for books such as "Les Nuits", by Alfred de Musset, Paris, J. Meynial, 1911. The typeface is obviously strongly influenced by the Art Nouveau aesthetic, highly ornamental, with organic forms that make it very distinctive and recognisable.

Rigaldon was originally redesigned for a commissioned project, to be used as lettering in the reprinting of classic French novels. Rigaldon is therefore available only in capitals, which have been drawn as closely as possible to the basic drawings of the original typeface. Several ligatures, symbols and other glyphs have been added to suit contemporary digital use.
