ABOUT NEW BURNS

New Burns is the result of a research project on the heritage of ITC (International Typeface Corporation), a New York foundry founded in 1970 that was a major player in the international photographic composition market for several decades. This project looked at the origins of this foundry and the impact it had on the market, both through its economic system (revolutionary for its time) and its formal impact on many typographic designers around the world through the ITC 'style' that appeared in many European typefaces designed at the time. New Burns is a tribute to Aaron Burns, one of the co-founders of ITC with Herb Lubalin and Edward Rondthaler. It is a rather organic and robust serif typeface, characterised by a generous x-height and low contrast. Its use is of course much more effective with close spacing and line spacing.
