ABOUT JAMES

James is a unicase typeface (capitals only) available in 2 versions: Regular and Stencil.

Its name also refers to its origin; this typeface is a contemporary reinterpretation of an alphabet seen on an album cover: "Afro-American Music - A Demonstration Recording by Dr. Willis James". The compilation is divided into several parts and is in fact a sort of description of the history of Afro-American music - African background, types of drums, song, speech etc.

The typeface itself is quite striking, since these shapes were designed in 1970, and yet they seem completely contemporary, with their changing proportions, sometimes narrow, sometimes very wide, which I thought was a very interesting mix to give a lot of rhythm and silhouette to the compositions. The overall weight has been revised to be even lighter and to further reinforce the idea of a silhouette drawn when composing a block of text. Some of the letters feature surprisingly geometric curves, such as the S, C, U and O, which is almost a perfect circle. The connections in the letters N, M, A, V and other obliques make James all the more contemporary and 'digital'. The R can also be reminiscent of shapes from the gothic avant-garde, very distinctive, making this typeface an identity graphic element in many contexts. The Stencil version is also quite original, exploring this style and this way of forming letters with modular shapes in sometimes unexpected ways.

James was designed by Eliott Grunewald and released in 2022
